Brewery Buildings & Construction

Planning to build a brewery? You should consider the benefits of building a prefab metal brewery. In this post, we are going to go over the advantages. We will also discuss common sizes, costs, and how to get started.

Why Build a Prefab Metal Brewery?

Why go with a prefab metal structure for your brewery, rather than a traditional building constructed on-site? Here are a few reasons:

  • Cost-effective: You can build a metal prefabricated brewery for a much lower price than you could a traditional stick-built structure. It is a more efficient manufacturing process, and as a result, you get to save. That frees up more of your budget to spend on equipment.
  • Rapid construction: A metal brewery building can be constructed in a matter of months. The traditional construction process where everything happens on-site typically takes much longer, and may involve more delays. So, if you want to get your brewery running as quickly as possible, prefab is the way to go.
  • Clear span design: Steel prefab structures allow for clear span design, providing the wide open, unobstructed spaces you need for your brewery equipment and barrels.
  • Customizable: When you order a steel prefabricated building, you will be able to choose a size and layout that work for you. You also will be able to customize the interior finishes for the walls and floor, which is very important, since you need all surfaces to be easy to clean.
  • Durable: Metal is a very durable material, steel in particular. A metal brewery can withstand inclement weather. It will not combust in a fire. Also, pests will not chew through it the way they would a wood building. This will not only protect the structure, but also the contents of your brewery.
  • Low-maintenance: Wooden buildings require a lot of upkeep. But metal does not degrade the way that wood does over time. It is not subject to rot. As a result, you will not need to do much to maintain your metal brewery building.
  • Long-lasting: A steel brewery building should be able to give you decades of use without significant degradation. This means you are unlikely to need to replace it at any point in the foreseeable future. If you decide you want to sell it at some point, you should be able to do so at a competitive price.

Common Sizes for Metal Brewery Buildings

In order to figure out how large a metal brewery building you need, you need to consider your brew system size.

Brew system size is measured in hectoliters. Every 100 liters = 1HL.

For every 1HL, you will need approximately 110 square feet of space.

So, multiply the HL by 110 to get the square footage for the brew system.

Of course, your brewery building will probably require some additional space for offices, bathrooms, storage, a tasting room, etc. So, it’s wise to start by coming up with a floor plan, and then calculating the total square footage for the entire brewery structure from there.

Most recommendations for brewery sizes start at around 3,000-6,000 square feet.

Many breweries are even larger than that. Here are some common metal brewery sizes we have seen:

The only way to know if you need a 60×200 building kit or some other size is to carefully draft a floor plan and consider the capacity you need, as discussed.

How Much Steel Brewery Buildings Cost?

A prefab metal building generally costs around $15 to $25 per square foot. That is without any sort of finishing or features.

Turnkey metal buildings usually cost somewhere between $25 to $45 per square foot.

To figure out what a metal brewery building will cost you, calculate your total square feet, and then multiply by the price per square foot that you are being charged.

Along with this basic cost, do not forget to add in the costs for:

  • Land
  • Permits
  • Shipping
  • Labor
  • Additional features and finishing
  • Equipment

These costs can vary quite a bit, so be sure to research your scenario thoroughly to calculate the full costs for your project accurately.

How to Get Started Building Your Brewery

If you want to build a steel brewery, here are the steps:

1. Come up with a basic plan to assess your requirements as we have discussed above. How large should your brewery be? What features do you want to include?

2. Choose a metal building company to work with. Remember to work with a company that has experience with metal brewery buildings since they have special requirements that more general-use facilities do not.

3. Set up a consultation with the metal building company.

4. Take care of land, permits, and site preparation.

5. Choose a size and layout for your metal brewery, and pick your customization options. Finalize your order.

6. Wait for the company to finish the prefab construction process.

7. The company will ship the metal building kit to your site.

8. Final construction takes place at your site.

9. Once the brewery is connected to utilities, you can start moving in your equipment.
